UN Day Dinner
Sunday, October 21, 2012

Since 1945, celebrations have been held worldwide to recognize and honor the important work of the United Nations as it strives for development, security, peace and human rights for all.

Believing that when the world’s women thrive, our societies and communities thrive, the UN has long worked towards empowering women.  In July 2010 the UN General Assembly created UN Women (www.unwomen.org) bringing together several different UN divisions under one umbrella to focus on issues of women’s equity.

The Centre County United Nations Association and   its Council of Organizations invite you to join us as our keynote speaker, a career United Nations official, addresses the UN’s role in empowering women in countries around the world in areas such as health, security and education and how such efforts are affected by politics, culture, war, conflict and historical circumstances.

During the social gathering, we will welcome guests from 30 nations, enjoy the Turkish music of Anatolian Fusion and acknowledge support received by the Centre County Community Foundation’s to purchase books for Bald Eagle, Bellefonte, Penns Valley, Philipsburg and State College schools to further the Centre County UNA’s 2011 initiative on “Water Scarcity and Lack of Safe Drinking Water.”

We look forward to seeing you.

Program

"Empowering Women in a Changing World "

Distinguished Speaker:

Gillian Sorrensen, Senior Advisor, The United Nations Foundation

In this presentation, Sorensen will discuss the current efforts to empower women around the globe, and the role of the United Nations in support efforts in areas of health, security, education, and opportunities. It is important to understand how such efforts are affected by politics and culture, as well as the historical circumstances surrounding women’s empowerment in countries around the world. Ms. Sorensen will touch on the work of UN Women, uniting prior offices around women’s issues, as well as that of UNFPA, UN Development Programme, peacekeeping efforts and the impact of war and conflict on women, in addition to the plight of refugee women. The UN Foundation’s work to support women and girls globally – through projects such as Every Woman Every Child – are also significant efforts to empower women in a changing world.

About Gillian Sorensen:

A powerful woman with a unique vantage point on major international issues, Gillian Sorensen has achieved a distinguished career in the UN, spanning the administrations of Kofi Annan, under whom she served as Assistant Secretary-General for External Affairs, and Boutros Boutros-Ghali, for whom she served as Special Advisor for Public Policy. In the course of her service as a career UN official, Ms. Sorensen was responsible for 4,000 NGOs, she responded to other UN issues relating to the world at large, and she served as an emissary for the Secretary-General.

As a persuasive advocate for the UN, Sorensen is now Senior Advisor to the UN Foundation. With a clear view of the big picture, she continues to address the world’s most pressing problems as she works to broaden UN support through advocacy, education, and public outreach.

We are most fortunate that Ms. Sorensen is traveling to the Penn State community to celebrate United Nations Day with the Centre County United Nations Association. In addition to meeting with Penn State students and faculty, she will be the featured speaker at the dinner celebration being held at the Ramada Inn on Sunday, October 21 beginning at 5:30 pm.  To learn more about the UN Day dinner celebration, check out the Centre County UN Association website www.centrecountypauna.org  Questions may be directed to Norma Keller at nrmkeller@gmail.com.
