     How Can the United Nations
Promote Peace in the Middle East?

 

Guest Speaker:  Dr. Arthur Goldschmidt

Arthur Goldschmidt, Jr., Professor Emeritus of Middle East History at Penn State University, is best known for his Concise History of the Middle East, a popular textbook whose eleventh edition is now in preparation, but he has also written the Historical Dictionary of Egypt (4th ed., 2014) and numerous other books and articles on 19th and 20th century Egyptian history. He has lived and conducted research in Egypt and several other Middle Eastern countries, with grants from the American Research Center in Egypt, the Social Science Research Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Fulbright Commission.    

Dr. Goldschmidt will suggest ways in which the United Nations and its specialized agencies can supplement the diplomatic efforts to solve the many political problems that currently beset the Middle East .
